Meet Our New Students | LLM Programme
July 12, 2022
We are excited to welcome our new batch of the LLM Programme this year! In 2021, the LLM programme was restructured with no division of streams, and greater flexibility in choosing courses. In AY 2022-23, the programme has seen an expansion with the University’s intake increasing from 50 to 75 students.
We spoke to a few of our new students from the incoming batch who shared their goals and interests. We wish all the very best to our new students for their academic journeys ahead.
Malika Jain
Malika hails from Gwalior, MP and graduated with a BA LLB degree from Amity University, Madhya Pradesh. In 2017, she had appeared for CLAT-UG examination. While she secured admission in other Universities, she nurtured the dream of studying at NLSIU. While she could not secure a seat here at the time, she says her dream has finally come true, even though it may be five years late.
On her dream being realised: I feel grateful every day when I am walking around the NLS campus; it is a great feeling to be here! I especially feel thrilled about the Library here – a three-storied building completely dedicated to books; nothing can be better than that! It is one of the best features of NLS. The infrastructure at the library is also very nice – Even while it is raining outside, one can sit beside the windows and look out as we sit with our books and study material.
On taking up law: I am interested in socio-political issues, and public policy and I really enjoy studying Comparative Public Law and Governance. I chose to take up law because I wanted to make an impact on society in some way. In newspapers, I used to read about the various struggles and challenges in society and felt I should do something to make an impact. So, even in my career path, I would like to choose something that will help me give back to society; it will either be academics or perhaps the Judicial services.
My interests: Outside of academics, I like to dance and read fiction. I also enjoy playing chess and badminton.
Masoom Reza
Masoom hails from Bihar and graduated with a law degree from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. At the age of seven, a reaction to medication resulted in side effects, leading to complete visual impairment in both his eyes.
His two reasons to be at NLSIU: The University was my first choice for taking up the Master’s programme due to the level of academics at the University. Another factor that reaffirmed my decision to join NLS was when I learnt that Prof. Sanjay Jain was teaching here. It was fascinating and inspiring for me as I also deal with total visual impairment in both my eyes. I sometimes am fearful about shifting to new places, especially when it’s far from home. There are issues with accessibility and navigation that I have to deal with. So it gives me hope when someone like Prof. Sanjay Jain who can understand these issues is at the University. I am looking forward to meeting him soon.
On taking up law: In 2014-16, I participated in a movement in Delhi towards a new legislation for Persons with Disabilities. During this process, there were discussions about legislation being a tool for social change and upliftment for Persons with Disabilities. Being part of these discussions made me think that if I ever got a chance, I would like to contribute to the society and hence, decided to take up law. My primary interests are Constitutional law and Human Rights.
Hobbies & Interests: I like to write poems in English and Hindi. (A few of his published poems are linked below)

Darshan Upadhyay
Darshan hails from Digboi in Assam. He graduated with a BA LLB (Hons) degree from NLU Assam with a specialisation in International Law and Business Law. While he didn’t have a clear plan initially on his path ahead, he says there was no turning back once he cleared CLAT-PG and got into NLS. “It is a dream for every law student to study here. The faculty at the University was also very inspirational to see and learn about,” said Darshan.
What I look forward to at NLS: Besides academics, I was very active in Moot Court competitions and represented NLU Assam several times including the KK Luthra Memorial Moot Competition (Winning team) and Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (Runner-up team in India-Asia rounds). I am very interested in debating and quizzing, and also helped set up a club called the Brahmaputra Quiz Club at NLU Assam. I am keen to explore such opportunities at NLSIU as well.
On taking up law and his plans ahead: I have thought about litigation but I will take a clear decision at the end of my LLM year. I really like International Law and my experience at the Jessup Moot also gave me insights into this field of law. Besides this, I also am interested in constitutional law, arbitration and conciliation.
Hobbies & Interests: I am passionate about following sports matches and tournaments during my free time. I also like reading books on History.
