March 7, 2023
On March 7, 2023, NLSIU was honoured to host Justice Martha K. Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, and Justice Philomena M. Mwilu, Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Supreme Court of Kenya. During their visit to the university campus, they interacted with a number of students and faculty members of the NLS community.
Chief Justice Martha Koome is the first woman in the country to hold the office. She delivered a lecture on ‘Championing People-Centred Justice in Kenya to Secure Social Transformation through Access to Justice’. Deputy Chief Justice Mwilu spoke about the Kenyan judiciary and provided an overview of the Kenyan Constitution adopted in 2010. This was followed by a vibrant Q&A session.
Reflecting on her visit to NLSIU, Chief Justice Koome said: “I had a wonderful time. I found the students very engaging, and they asked brilliant questions. They have also read widely about the Kenyan Constitution. I was very impressed by the students as well as the faculty, and the warm welcome we received. The University itself is doing a great job, moulding young people and the interests they have in the law, to protect the rights of the people, and to ensure justice. Besides this, such visits also help build international relations.”
In what is her first visit to Bangalore, Deputy Chief Justice Mwilu, said that such visits facilitate exchange of knowledge. “I especially enjoyed the Q&A session where we were able to interact with several students. It is very evident that they are well read and are being taught well by the faculty here. I would tell them to educate themselves even further about the law,” she said.
