Public Policy Challenge 2023: Model G20 Summit | MPP Students from NLSIU Win Best Negotiator Award
May 15, 2023
We congratulate our students Neel Lohit Pandey, Sarish Tripathi and Subham Shrivastava, of the Master’s Programme in Public Policy on winning the Best Negotiator award at the Public Policy Challenge 2023: Model G20 Summit. The event was organised by Global Trade Observer, a thought leadership platform for policymakers, scholars and corporates.
The competition had over 50 students invited from several institutions in India, including Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Indian Institute of Management Rohtak among others.
The topic of the summit was ‘Achieving Sustainable Development through Green Trade’. We spoke to the team to find out more about their experience in the competition.
On their experience in the competition:
The competition was a great experience and challenged us to think quickly on our feet to solve real time problems that the G20 faces with respect to Sustainable Development and Green Trade.
We raised issues of Eurocentrism, the CBDR model and the precedents set in the Kyoto Protocol (Annex I and Non-Annex countries) and the Bali Peace Clause of WTO. We also raised concerns on the Reverse Consensus Method at the World Trade Organization.
Our interventions mainly focused on rising above narrow considerations of small-scale solutions and replace them with significant efforts in Greening of the Logistics Network, for a sustainable Green Trade (Given that, the International Maritime Organization has already been working on the phasing out of pollutants in the Maritime Industry). We also suggested a better Tech Transfer mechanism, and whilst invoking the Meadows Limits to Growth model, we suggested greater collaboration between the Global North and Global South.
On being declared winners:
Being declared the Best Negotiators was really a testimony to the fact that perseverance and patience pay off. Our interventions on Green Trade were well received and we were able to effectively lobby with our co participants.
