NIRF 2023 Review
The NIRF rankings are based on the five parameters mentioned below. Here is how NLSIU performed on these parameters:
- Teaching, Learning & Resources – 79.09
- Research & Professional Practice – 71.85
- Graduation Outcome – 82.99
- Outreach & Inclusivity – 73.58
- Perception – 100.00
- Total – 80.52
This ranking confirms and extends NLSIU’s leadership in Indian legal education. Since 2020, the University has committed itself to a radical and comprehensive transformation to redefine the future of legal education in India. We have expanded intake across our academic programmes from 190 (AY 2020-21) to 560 (AY 2023-24). The increased intake has allowed the University to accommodate students from diverse backgrounds from across the country and Karnataka. While increasing aggregate student intake, we have reduced class sizes for the core and elective courses by adopting various academic and pedagogic innovations to ensure that we continue to deliver the best learning outcomes in any Indian law school.
Our physical infrastructure has grown to accommodate the expansion of the University including new classrooms, a reimagined and redeveloped library that is among the best academic libraries in India, and improved hostels and residential amenities. The University has adopted and implemented a comprehensive digital transformation of all academic, administrative and residential processes to ensure an enabling and friction-free teaching and learning environment.
In the last three Academic Years, we have recruited 68 highly accomplished faculty across disciplines from the best universities in the world. Our research output has increased by nearly 50% over the last ranking cycle, and we are aggressively building research partnerships with the best universities in Asia and around the world. Our outstanding faculty continue to contribute to the development of new and useful social and legal research and policy reform at international, national, and local levels.
We have rebuilt our administrative teams to integrate accomplished professionals in new leadership and administrative positions at NLS to deliver seamlessly on these transformation plans. We thank our students, staff and faculty for their efforts to deliver these exceptional outcomes and our Governing Bodies, including the judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, the Bar Council of India and the Government of Karnataka, for their steadfast commitment and support to the University’s efforts to become a leading global law school in the next decade.
About NIRF Rankings
Launched in 2015 by the HRD Ministry (now the Ministry of Education), the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks higher educational institutions across India. The institutes are ranked under various categories including universities, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research. The category of Law was added to the rankings in 2018, and since then, NLSIU has consistently maintained the top rank.
