We are excited to welcome our new batch of the BA LLB (Hons) Programme in AY 2023-24! With a total of 240 students this year, this is the largest cohort of the BA LLB (Hons) programme that the University has admitted so far. Last year, the programme intake had increased from 120 to 180 students. The batch comprises students from across the country – at least from 16 different states this year.

We asked a few of our new BA LLB (Hons) students to share their experiences, goals, and interests. We wish the new batch all the very best for their academic journeys ahead.

Navya Nair

Background:

I was born in Delhi, where I lived for nearly 10 years of my life. I have lived in many other cities over the years, including Kolkata, Chandigarh and Jaipur, and have been to 5 different schools in these various places.

What attracted you to law school:

During my schooling, I was interested in Political Science, History, Morality and Philosophy, causing me to become interested in Law as a subject for further education. I am also extremely interested in the Constitution and the development of laws, and even constructed my school projects around the same topics.

What do you look forward to in NLS:

I look forward to a new journey of learning at NLS. Learning about this new subject that interests me with the best faculty in law is the experience I am most interested in. I look forward to making new friends, expanding my knowledge base, and enjoying the weather in Bangalore! Over these five years, I wish to gain new experiences and get insights into my own likes and interests in law to make an informed choice about my career.

Interests and Hobbies:

I am interested in art, music and singing. I am trained as a 2nd year Indian classical singer as well. I have won marathons in the past and also participated in national level equestrian championships. I have also participated in debates and MUNs in my school.

Shamya Bennehalli

Your Background/Journey so far:

I was born and raised in Davanagere, a city in central Karnataka.  I did my schooling from Kendriya Vidyala and I’ve been fascinated with social sciences right from my school days. This led me to take up humanities for my pre-university education.

What attracted you to law/ law school?

As a first generation (to-be) lawyer, it was my love for social sciences, especially political science, that pulled me towards law. I wanted to explore our society from the lens of law and polity. I wanted to be aware of my surroundings, in a way I wouldn’t normally be. Also, current affairs, especially related to international happenings, captured my interest.

What do you look forward to at NLS:

I look forward to learning new things, not just academically, but also for myself. I am a person who loves to stay busy and NLSIU is a perfect space for that! On a lighter note, I also want to catch up on my social skills that I seem to have lost during the Covid lockdowns. I am also looking forward to exploring multiple new areas of interests during my next 5 years at NLS.

Interests & hobbies:

My interests range from watching movies to reading the most random articles and books that I find. I also love to go out for runs whenever I can while blasting music through my earphones.

Siddharth Nair

Background/Journey:

While my family hails from Kerala, I was raised in Bangalore and grew up in the city. After completing my schooling at Treamis World School in Bangalore, I developed a keen interest in law. This fascination was sparked by my aunt, who serves as a judicial officer. During my vacations, I had the privilege of accompanying her to work and observing court proceedings. This experience ignited a strong desire within me to pursue a career in law.

Reason for Choosing Law/Law School:

Driven by my aunt’s work, I aspired to follow in her footsteps and venture into the world of law. Securing admission to the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has been a dream come true for me. I am grateful to have achieved a rank in CLAT that granted me entry into NLSIU.

What are you looking forward to at NLSIU:

I eagerly look forward to forging lasting friendships with individuals from what promises to be the most diverse batch yet. The opportunity to interact with a wide range of talented and like-minded individuals is something I find truly exciting. NLSIU is the best law institution in the country and I am looking forward to using the varied opportunities this learning space offers. The exhaustive library, the elite academicians and the wonderful infrastructure are all open to benefit my dream of a great platform to build my career. I aim to use my time at NLSIU to reinvent and develop myself as an individual, both personally and academically.

Interests & Hobbies:

Beyond my academic pursuits, I have a strong passion for watching movies, particularly those in the horror genre. I also enjoy indulging in anime and any form of storytelling with a captivating lore. I love researching and finding out about things, however mundane it may be. As an introvert, these hobbies provide me with a means of relaxation and entertainment.

Your journey so far:

Although I was born in Jodhpur, my family shifted around a lot when I was a kid. Because of this I was able to experience many cities across India including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Gurugram and Lucknow. When I was in the 3rd grade, we finally went back to Jodhpur and I lived there till I completed my schooling from Delhi Public School, Pali Road.

What attracted you to law school:

Even as a child, I was always fascinated by law and lawyers. I was amazed at how vast and dense and tangled the law was, and I was even more amazed at how lawyers were able to untangle this beast and were actually able to comprehend it. That fascination grew throughout the years and bloomed into a passion for law by the time I came to the 11th grade when I finally decided to set out on the path to law school.

What do you look forward to at NLS:

NLS has a reputation for being one of the hardest law schools to get into and an even harder one to graduate from. And even in my first week, I’ve understood that this reputation is well deserved. Despite this, I look forward to my time here. Though I know that it will be challenging, I also know that it will make me a much more polished person and lawyer by the time my journey here reaches its end.

Interests and hobbies:

I love a lot of different things but to sum them up, I would say that I love the Arts. I love reading and writing. I love classical dance and have learnt both Bharatnatyam and Kathak (and also managed to get a diploma in it!). I’m a self-taught keyboard player though not a very good one. I absolutely love any and all forms of art!

Your background and why you chose law:

I was born in Mizoram but grew up in various parts of North India due to my father’s work. I had opted for Humanities in class XII and completed my schooling in Dehradun. Initially, my plan was to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Delhi, but Law as a career option had always been among my interests. Upon weeks of contemplating about it and having numerous conversations with my father, I finally decided to go for it. I enrolled into a coaching centre and started my preparation for CLAT.

What do you look forward to at NLS:

Here at NLS, I look forward to embarking on a learning journey, making great friends, and learning from my peers . Though I have my sights set on the corporate field, anything can happen in the next five years.

Interests & Hobbies:

In my free time, I engage in physical activities such as playing football and basketball; I enjoy exercising and like to keep myself fit. I also enjoy reading.
