The Writing Centre (TWC)

The Writing Centre (TWC) at NLSIU, established in 2023, is a centre dedicated to strengthening reading, critical thinking and writing practices amongst the NLSIU student community. Writing is not just an essential tool for scholarly and professional communication; it is a craft to be honed. TWC focuses on equipping students with the skills to make them self-reliant and aware readers and writers.

TWC offerings include curated modules and workshops on reading–writing, along with one-on-one consultations to NLSIU students across programmes and batches.

Academic Reading and Writing Module

TWC offers an Academic Reading and Writing Module across first-year batches of the BA LLB, LLB, LLM, and the PhD programmes. The six-session module is carefully designed to enable students to read closely, engage with sources and structure their own writing. We use a combination of in-class demonstration and hands-on exercises to gradually build towards an intentional engagement with academic texts.

The Writing Studio

The Writing Studio is an initiative to hold reading and writing consultations with students at NLSIU. The Studio is meant as a safe, non-judgemental space for students to take ownership of their writing journeys. We take a creative and critical approach to reading–writing, through one-on-one mentoring sessions, small-group workshops, and structured feedback.

Our team of writing instructors is available in the Library at designated hours to offer one-on-one support in the following areas:

  • Building active reading and comprehension skills

  • Reading academic texts for structure and content

  • Breaking down difficult passages

  • Constructive feedback on essays, projects and other research-based writing

  • Writing clearly and concisely

  • Improving structure and flow in writing

  • Engaging with sources (note-taking, summarising, paraphrasing, citation)
