CAL212 | Aviation Law

This course serves as a first introduction and provides a basic understanding of civil aviation with a particular focus on Indian law. The course is structured in a format that addresses the first principles of aviation law and then delves into areas of the law discussed in both academic and regulatory fields. As part of their teaching practice, students are required to participate in the design and development of guidelines and agreements.

Aviation law has a special character due to cooperation between countries and harmonisation of industries. Cooperation and harmony do not eliminate existing conflicts. The course offered is a combination of public and private law. Much of aviation trade and regulation is facilitated by intermediaries acting within their delegated powers. Special laws and special contracts are common in the aviation industry and this course provides an opportunity to engage with them.

Course Coverage: First Principles of International Aviation Law; International Civil Aviation and Domestic Civil Aviation. Air Navigation; Air Traffic Services; Meteorological Information and Satellite Imagery; Airport Business; Airport ownership; Privatisation of Airport; Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India; Aerodrome responsibility; Ground Handling; Retail Outlets; International frontiers and taxation; Aviation and its impact on Environment; Safety and Security in Aviation; Artificial Intelligence, Automation of Air Traffic Services, and Passenger Identification and Privacy; and Dispute Resolution in Aviation.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles of aviation law and be able to demonstrate their understanding and application in a variety of situations.

Teaching Method: This course is taught through lectures, student participation in class discussions, and case law analysis using the Socratic method.
