BIP201 | Intellectual Property Laws

This course is offered to the 4th year students of the B.A.LLB programme and aims to provide a critical introduction to both established and emerging forms of intellectual property. The course
delves into the legal, philosophical, economic, and historical underpinnings of various types of
intellectual property, with a particular focus on analysing how different rights and limitations
associated with them impact creativity and innovation. For example, one key area of examination
within the realm of copyright law will be the balance between a robust user-rights framework and
the rights granted to creators of copyrightable works. Such discussions are particularly relevant in
light of the growing prevalence of algorithmic creativity in today’s world. To facilitate
comparative perspectives, the course incorporates a diverse range of primary and secondary
materials from different regions across the globe. The primary pedagogical methods employed are
Socratic discussions and case studies, encouraging students to actively engage with the subject
matter. Students are expected to complete all assigned readings prior to each class session.
