Prof. Dwight Golann Visits NLSIU

We are excited to have Prof. Dwight Golann, law professor and legal mediator, at the NLS campus this week. Prof. Golann is Visiting Faculty at NLSIU during the March trimester where he’s teaching an elective course titled Negotiation, Mediation, and Mediation Advocacy Workshop.

Prof. Golann is a Research Professor at the University of California College of Law, San Francisco, and Suffolk University Law School. He teaches mediation and negotiation for dispute resolution organizations across the United States and has taught in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. He is an active mediator who has mediated hundreds of legal disputes. Professor Golann has published widely in the field of dispute resolution. He is the author of the American Bar Association’s leading books on mediation and on mediation advocacy, the European Union’s Ebook on mediation advocacy, and numerous articles, and is co-author of two law school textbooks. He holds the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators and the American Bar Association’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Dispute Resolution and is former Scholar in Residence and an Honorary Member of the International Academy of Mediators.

Prior to joining the Suffolk Law School faculty, Professor Golann was a civil litigator, practicing with a Boston law firm, and also was Chief of Consumer Protection for the Massachusetts Attorney General. He later served as Chief of the Government Bureau and Trial Division for the Attorney General, directing the litigation and settlement of all cases against officials and agencies of the Commonwealth. He has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.

During his stay on campus between April 29th and May 3rd, Prof. Golann will be giving lectures on campus among other interactions through the week.

Elective Course 

Prof. Golann is co-teaching the course on Negotiation, Mediation, and Mediation Advocacy Workshop with NLS faculty Sahana Ramesh. This course teaches techniques of effective negotiation, mediation and mediation advocacy. It includes theoretical perspectives but focuses on developing students’ practical skills as a negotiator for clients in legal disputes and business transactions and as an advocate in the mediation process. It is a standalone course. It does not require as a prerequisite completion of other courses in dispute resolution.

Classroom session on ADR  

Prof. Golann will also conduct a separate classroom session with the 5-Year BA LLB (Hons) and 3-Year LLB (Hons) students on Alternative Dispute Resolution. The session will take place on Friday, May 3, 2024.
