This is an introductory course in sociology. It begins with a discussion on the uses of sociological approaches to social life, institutions, and relations. The course then takes up some of the key themes in sociology and anthropology in the Indian and the global context. The thematic introductions are organised through modules on labour and class; privilege; caste; religion; gender and sexuality; and tribe. Finally, the course returns to the question of the discipline and its approaches through discussions on institutional contexts, practices, and people, particularly in the Indian context.
