Out of Syllabus | Reading Beyond the Classrooms at NLSIU

April 25, 2024

“What does it mean for students in a law school in Bangalore to read texts by French and German social theorists in an attempt to make sense of a theoretical world predominantly produced by the West, while feeling the compulsion to show some fidelity to their postcolonial-ness by reading authors from Africa?” – this is a question posed by the Out of Syllabus group, an informal reading group at NLSIU which engages with texts beyond the classroom and brings together students from across batches and programmes.

Run by a set of students and guided by faculty member Dr. Atreyee Majumder, this group first came together at the end of 2021 and grew further, in terms of both size and interest, during 2022. Since then, the the group has been discussing readings across a range of topics which may or may not have anything to do with the law. In this video, we asked Dr. Atreyee and one of our students (Manhar Bansal) to tell us more about their experiences and the impact such groups can have for students in a university campus.

A list of their readings can also be found here.
