BIP201 | Intellectual Property Law

This course is offered to the 4th year BA LLB (Hons) students and aims to provide a critical introduction to both established and emerging forms of intellectual property. The course delves into the legal, philosophical, economic, and historical underpinnings of various types of intellectual property, with a particular focus on analyzing how different rights and limitations associated with them impact creativity and innovation. For example, one key area of examination within the realm of copyright law will be the balance between the rights granted to creators of copyrightable works and a robust user-rights framework. Such discussions are particularly relevant considering the growing prevalence of algorithmic creativity in today’s world. To facilitate comparative perspectives, the course incorporates a diverse range of primary and secondary materials from different regions across the world. The primary pedagogical methods employed are Socratic discussions and case studies, encouraging students to actively engage with the subject matter. Students are expected to complete all assigned readings prior to each class session.
