Criminal Law-I is a mandatory course for students enrolled in the B.A., LL.B (Hons.) programme. It is the only core course on substantive criminal law. The course is meant to introduce students to the basic foundational principles of criminal law, including the constituent elements of a crime (actus reus and mens rea), principles of causation and concurrence, principles of liability, defences and offences in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) ), as well as inchoate offences. Changes made to the IPC by the BNS will also be discussed and analyzed in every module. The course will be reading-heavy, with a focus on close and critical reading of cases. Students are expected to read cases assigned for each class, and come prepared to discuss them.
