This course builds on the foundational aspects of urban sociology, examining contemporary issues related to urbanization in India and around the world. While it develops from the basic understanding of urban sociology, it is designed as a standalone course focusing on modern urban challenges. The approach to the course emphasizes the study of primary sources, including foundational books, journal articles, and key reports, allowing students to gain firsthand knowledge of the issues at hand. This approach ensures that future lawyers, policymakers, and scholars acquire a deeper understanding of contemporary urban issues and develop the critical skills needed to address them. Pedagogically, the course will be a mix of lectures, Socratic discussions, group work, video-based discussions, and field assignments.

Students will be expected to read assigned materials in advance and actively engage in discussions, group presentations, and debates. Emphasis will be placed on understanding not only theoretical perspectives but also real-world applications through fieldwork, fostering a well-rounded understanding of urban realities. Presentations and group discussions will encourage peer evaluation and questioning, enhancing students’ critical thinking and analytical skills.
