Academic Support Programme (ASP)

Aim

The academic experience at the Law School distinguishes it from its peers. Yet, many of our students find university-level academics daunting and inaccessible, often due to differential learning experiences at school.

The Academic Support Programme (ASP), an SBA Committee under Article 3(a) of the SBA Constitution, 2022, works to address these concerns. The Committee’s mandate revolves around providing holistic and all-encompassing academic support and guidance to the student community so as to ensure that everyone has a fair shot at a comprehensive university learning experience. Every academic year, the ASP implements a number of volunteer-based academic initiatives for the student community and manages the largest student volunteer pool at the Law School. The Committee also executes a policy advisory function, working in close collaboration with the SBA Office-bearers, the Student Council, the University Administration, the faculty, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Committee’s core initiatives are focussed towards tending to the concerns and needs of newly-admitted batches across all full-time degree programmes at the Law School. The ASP’s initiatives are implemented through the University’s largest student volunteer pool and through the Academic Support Initiative (ASI), a permanent collective that assists and advises the ASP in all of its activities.

Our Work

The ASP perhaps enjoys the broadest mandate out of all SBA Committees. Our work, thus, is dynamic and incapable of being straitjacketed into neat, routine categories.

At the beginning of every academic year, the Committee conducts a panoply of orientations for newly-admitted students so as to introduce them to useful skills that go on to hold them in good stead throughout their Law School lives. For instance, the ASP conducts detailed orientations and workshops on project writing, academic research, using academic databases, accessing library resources, and using Microsoft Word. Additionally, the Committee provides detailed legal academic writing assistance by appointing ‘ASP Project Guides’ to newly-admitted students in the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.B. (Hons.) degree programmes. The ASP’s English Reading, Writing, and Speaking (RWS) initiative tends to the special requirements of students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

In addition to the aforementioned activities, the Committee also appoints ‘ASP Course Facilitators’ for all core courses taught at the Law School. This initiative, implemented in collaboration with the faculty, allows students to tap into the knowledge and talent pools of their immediate seniors with respect to a particular course and serves as an enriching experience for senior students interested in teaching and mentoring. The ASP also appoints ‘ASP Course Buddies’ for specific courses that warrant special attention and support. Additionally, at the end of every academic year, the Committee appoints a number of ‘ASP Repeat Facilitators’ to assist students writing repeat or first-attempt exams.

As part of its mandate, the ASP maintains the ASP Student Database, a dynamic repository of academic knowledge and resources collated over years. The Database, primarily, contains resources like past years’ exam question papers and their answer keys, notes and summaries, teaching material, orientation videos, readings, books, relevant journal articles, and the like. The Database serves as a valuable resource to the student community and is regularly updated to ensure that students have access to top-quality academic resources on demand.

The ASP also provides internship-related support to the student community as internships, under current regulations, form an integral academic component of all degree programmes. To that end, the Committee conducts workshops on CV and statement of purpose writing, different internship experiences, application writing, etc. The Committee works closely with the SBA Office-bearers, the Student Council, and the University Administration to address students’ internship-related concerns from a policy perspective.

Finally, the ASP advises relevant stakeholders, including the Vice Chancellor’s Office, the Dean (Academics), the UG Programme Chairperson, and the SBA Office-bearers, on academic policy and the state of academic affairs in the student body. The Convenor and Joint Convenor regularly interact with senior administration members and faculty on a wide range of issues that concern the academic experience at the Law School, and work to conceptualise practicable solutions for the same.
