The primary objective of this course is to familiarise undergraduate students with the various contours of administrative discretion which is exercised as part of decision-making processes in governance. In the process, it also aims to acquaint them with the need to make executive power accountable to the larger public. It is hoped that by the end of this course, the students will be able to critically evaluate the need to standardize and guide discretion in administrative decision-making processes, so as to prevent arbitrary or unprincipled outcomes. While the main emphasis will be on outlining the significant doctrinal developments in the field of Indian Administrative Law, the course will also try to set the stage for later courses that will engage more substantively with the growing literature in the field of regulatory governance.
