Effective policy engagement on artificial intelligence or ‘AI’ requires a deep and holistic understanding across three domains: (a) technical research underpinning modern advancements in AI; (b) market dynamics of the global AI ecosystem, including the roles, responsibilities and interactions between different actors; and (c) different approaches to regulating AI technologies around the world.

This is an introductory course that will explore these issues through a combination of lectures, readings and classroom discussions, which will be interspersed with interactive workshops, case studies, guest lectures and multimedia sessions.

The goal is to provide students with a basic understanding of the technical foundations of AI, the current business environment, and regulatory approaches. The focus will be the Indian context, though global approaches will be referenced. Participants will explore emerging AI policy issues in areas such as privacy, data governance, and copyright. while developing practical skills and engaging with industry experts for nuanced perspectives. The course will conclude with a discussion on career opportunities for those interested in AI policy.
