Criminal Law-I is a mandatory course for students enrolled in the LL.B (Hons.) programme. It is the only core course on substantive criminal law. The course is meant to introduce students to the basic foundational principles of criminal law, including the constituent elements of a crime (actus reus and mens rea), principles of causation and concurrence, principles of liability, defences and offences in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as inchoate offences. The course will be reading-heavy, with a focus on close and critical reading of cases. Students are expected to read cases assigned for each class, and come prepared to discuss them.

The objective of the course is to enable students to get an understanding of the basic principles of criminal law, offences, defences, and inchoate offences. At the end of this course, students will have a principle-based understanding of substantive criminal law, which will equip them to engage with the discipline further. They will have the skills required to pursue advanced courses in substantive criminal law, and to practice substantive criminal law.
