- Elective Course
This course is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of statistical and econometric principles and their application within the legal context. The course serves as a foundational course in the programme, building on prior knowledge of statistical concepts while also being accessible to students new to the subject matter. The course takes a balanced approach, combining theoretical concepts with practical applications relevant to legal cases. It incorporates both primary and secondary readings, including relevant case law, academic articles, and real-world examples. The choice of materials aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of statistical and econometric methods used in legal proceedings.
The course employs a combination of lectures and seminar-style discussions to facilitate active learning. While the lectures will provide a sound theoretical foundation, seminar discussions will encourage critical thinking and the application of concepts to real-world legal scenarios.
The term paper will help promote problem-solving and enhance students’ ability to analyse and present statistical evidence.
The course follows a module structure to ensure a logical progression of topics. It starts with an introduction to descriptive statistics, followed by a discussion on the tools of inferential statistics including probability, sampling and hypothesis testing. The second half of the course focuses on the subject matter of econometrics and the applications of varius econometrics models and tools in legal cases.
Throughout the course, students will engage in practical exercises, including analysing case studies, conducting statistical analyses using MS Excel, and presenting their findings.
