Understanding of Politics and Society in India is integral part in understanding public policy
processes. One cannot understand politics outside of its social context; particularly Indian
politics needs to be understood more sociologically than through enlightened political theories
developed in western contexts. Such kind of sociological framework to appreciate politics and
vice-versa is essential for policy professionals to understand the system in ‘holism’. Even though
the political system in India was inherited after decolonization was mainly based on the
Westminster model, it experienced significant changes that hardly had any resemblance to the
British system of governance. This course is designed to revolve around the ever-changing
complications of the political, which is entangled in equally complex socio-economic and cultural
circumstances, which shape public policies.
