Research Methodology is a mandatory course for the LL.M degree programme. I have approached the course from a perspective of “skilling” post-graduate students in research, writing, and methods, as they commence an advanced programme in law. Although a mandatory course, I propose to teach the course in a “seminar style” – largely discussion oriented. I expect students to read the materials assigned and come prepared to class, for detailed and focused discussions on the topics assigned. The materials chosen are mostly secondary texts, which discuss various methods and approaches to research. I also propose to invite colleagues at NLSIU, and other institutions in India and abroad to discuss their approaches to research, particularly their doctoral work. Through this “experience sharing,” I propose to guide students towards choosing an appropriate research method/skill as they commence work on their dissertations.

The objective of this course is to equip students with skills required for reading, writing, and research, in order to enable them to effectively research and write their dissertations, research proposals, and research papers.
