Noor Ameena has served as a Legislative Assistant to a Member of Parliament through the LAMP (Legislative Assistants to Members of Parliament) Fellowship, offered by PRS Legislative Research, New Delhi.
She has also participated in various field-based research projects as a Research Associate and Field Researcher, including: (a) the Challenges in Establishing Functional Family Courts in three South Indian States, AP, Telangana and Kerala, and (b) The Role of Open Prisons in the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Prisoners, funded by the Ministry of Law and Justice, and Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, respectively.
Her research interests are diverse. During the Master’s programme at TISS, she studied the influx of inter-state migrant labourers from Northern and North Eastern States to Kerala post-2000s. While pursuing her LLM at NALSAR, she studied Indian higher education policies with a case study on access to legal education.
She is currently pursuing her PhD at NALSAR on a thesis titled “Muslim Law and Legal Pluralism: Understanding the Practices of Marriage and Divorce in Islamic Law in Kerala.” Her research explores the operationalization of Muslim Personal Law through Mahal Committees, Qazi Offices, and Family Courts in Kerala.
Her academic interests include law and legal pluralism, gender and religion, labor and migration, and equity in higher education. She strongly believes in the generative possibilities of doing legal education and research in meaningful conversations with communities.
