June 13, 2023
We extend a warm welcome to Dr. Sudhanshu Kumar who joins NLSIU as Associate Professor of Law. He was previously an Assistant Professor at NALSAR, Hyderabad where he taught corporate and competition law for undergraduate and postgraduate students. He also headed the Centre for Corporate and Competition Laws at NALSAR.
Over the past few years, his research interests have revolved around the area of Antitrust Laws.
In this interview, he shares more about his interests and his work.
Can you tell us more about yourself/your background?
I was born and brought up in Patna. I completed my schooling from Don Bosco Academy and then pursued my undergraduate law degree from Chanakya National Law University, Patna. In fact, I am from the very first batch of CNLU. I completed my master’s degree in law from NALSAR, Hyderabad. During my LLM, I joined the TAship programme of the University which then paved my way into joining NALSAR as an assistant professor which continued until May 2023. I completed my PhD degree from NALSAR in the area of competition law, which also happens to be my primary research interest.
Outside of work, I love travelling and exploring new places and new cuisines. Music and family road trips are important aspects of my life.
What are your main areas of interest and teaching? How did your interest in these areas begin?
My main areas of interest include competition law, corporate law and corporate governance. My interest in antitrust laws developed during my master’s course, especially while I was researching for my dissertation. It’s just a fascinating area to study and teach. This is the reason why I preferred the subject for my PhD as well.
What will you be teaching at NLS?
In the coming trimester, I will be teaching Contracts II for the second year BA.LLB Students. I hope to take up papers in corporate and competition law in the coming future.
Your thoughts on starting your teaching journey at NLS:
I am very excited to start my new journey at the most prestigious law university of the country. I hope to benefit both academically and professionally from the vibrant academic culture and also look forward to research collaborations with my peers.
Which one book / podcast / published piece would you recommend to our students and why?
I would recommend “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel. The book explores the different ways people think about money and is useful to anyone who is looking to make financial choices.
Could you highlight some of your key projects or publications?
I am currently in the process of writing a piece on the theme of ‘stakeholdersim’ within Indian corporate law where I am trying to examine if the theoretical shift has any practical significance for non-shareholder constituencies. Another area that I am working currently is on antitrust concerns in case of disruptive innovation.
In terms of completed works, I recently published a book with Routledge UK titled, Regulating cartels in India: effectiveness of competition law.
