NLS Faculty Dr. Ashok R Patil Appointed New Vice-Chancellor of NUSRL, Ranchi

We congratulate NLS faculty member Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R Patil for being appointed Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi. Prof. Patil succeeds Prof. (Dr) Kesava Rao Vurrakula, as he steps into this new role as Vice Chancellor of NUSRL on June 17, 2023.
Prof. Patil’s association with NLSIU is nearly 15 years long. He joined NLSIU in August 2008 as Associate Professor under the Chair on Consumer Law and Practice and was promoted as Professor of Law in 2011. At NLSIU, he was Chair Professor of Consumer Law and Practice (Ministry of Consumer Affairs, GoI) and Founder-Director of the Online Consumer Mediation Center (Ministry of Consumer Affairs, GoI). He was also a member of the Academic Council, Executive Council, and General Council of NLSIU. He holds a B.Sc. in Criminology & Forensic Science, BA LLB, LLM, and Ph.D. degrees from Karnatak University.
Prof. Patil’s academic and research interests include consumer laws and services, online mediation, insurance law, international law, corporate law, food laws, ISO and ISI standards, regulatory authorities, e-learning and clinical legal education.
Research and other contributions:
Prof. Patil has been a member of several boards and institutions including The International Association of Consumer Law (IACL), Consumer International, London, UK, and International Academy of Financial Consumers, Seoul among others.
Some of Prof. Patil’s key projects at NLS include the Online Consumer Mediation Centre pilot project; Online Dispute Resolution project on “Effective Implementation of Online Consumer Dispute Resolution through Mediation”; “A Specific Review of the Karnataka Essential Commodities (Public Distribution System) Control Order, 1992”; and on “Unfair Trade Practices: Challenges & the Way Forward” among others. The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice also brings out the ‘International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice‘ annually.
Besides his academic and research contributions, Prof. Patil has played a key role at the University in various capacities. This includes his role as Chairperson of the UG Council (2016-2018), Faculty Advisor for Legal Services Clinic (2012-2015 & 2018) and for Sports (2009-2012), Faculty Coordinator for Distance Education Department (2013-14) and Centre for Child and the Law (2014 -2015), Chairman of the Library Committee, Convenor for Health Infrastructure and General Matters Committee, and as Chief Warden (2012-13). He has also served as the Coordinator for Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), and the Anti Ragging Squad at the University.
NLSIU faculty as Vice-Chancellors:
Prof. Patil joins a growing list of NLS faculty who have held positions as Vice-Chancellor at other universities. NLSIU’s Founder Director Prof. (Dr.) Madhava Menon went on to establish NUJS, Kolkata and was Founder Vice-Chancellor of the university; and Prof. (Dr.) N L Mitra (founding faculty and Director of NLSIU), became the Founder Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Jodhpur.
Former and current NLSIU faculty who presently serve as Vice Chancellors include: Prof. (Dr.) V. Nagaraj, Vice-Chancellor, Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur; Prof. (Dr.) V.S. Elizabeth, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli; Prof. (Dr.) Srikrishna Deva Rao, Vice Chancellor, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad; and Prof. (Dr.) V.C. Vivekanandan, Vice-Chancellor of HNLU, Raipur.
In the past, NLS faculty have held prestigious positions at other institutions: Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh was the Founder Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR, Hyderabad and Founder Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi; Prof. (Dr.) S. Japhet was the first Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore Central University; Prof (Dr.) Rose Varghese was the Vice Chancellor of NUALS, Kochi, and later was Dean of Faculty at Jamia Millia Islamia Central University, New Delhi; Prof. (Dr.) V. Vijayakumar was Vice-Chancellor of National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal and Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University; and Prof. (Dr.) Kesava Rao Vurrakula served as Vice-Chancellor of NUSRL, Ranchi until now.
