NLSIU Joins the Law and Development Research Network
February 22, 2023
We are happy to announce that the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru is now part of the Law and Development Research Network (LDRN).
The LDRN seeks to enhance knowledge and understanding of the role of law, both domestic and international, in relation to development and governance, as perceived globally and locally, and is therefore concerned with the social functioning of legal systems primarily in the context of countries in the Global South. It envisages that the LDRN community will engage in fruitful discussions from both orthodox and critical perspectives on the role of law in development.
NLSIU has had a history of engaging with different issues related to Law and Development in more ways than one:
- Law and Development as part of our core curriculum: As part of its curriculum innovation, NLS has gone beyond the Bar Council of India requirements to include courses on law, poverty and development across its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. These include the 5 year B.A.LLB. (Hons), the 3 year LLB. (Hons.), and the Master’s Programme in Public Policy programmes. Our PhD programmes also support research that lies at the intersection of law and legal theory; development theory and policy; economics and other disciplines.
- Faculty Expertise in L&D: While many faculty and research centres work on issues broadly arising in the context of law and development, it also forms the core area of interest for several faculty at NLSIU.
- Student Interest: Apart from faculty expertise, there is tremendous interest in law and development among the student body. This enables an intellectual environment where students organise, participate and take initiative around many L&D issues. For instance, student run journals such as the Socio-Legal Review and the Indian Journal of International Economic Law include L&D related articles and commentaries as part of their mandates. Similarly, the Law School Policy Review is an active forum that publishes articles and interviews on a wide range of law, economics and development issues.
LDRN Conference
As a partner institution, NLSIU will be participating in the 6th General Conference of the LDRN. The Conference is being hosted by National Law University, New Delhi, from 19 – 21 August 2023.
About the Conference
The Conference will present a unique opportunity for scholars from South Asia to share their ideas regardingthe development challenges of the region with scholars from other parts of the Global South and North. The Conference will further serve as an opportunity to forge academic and research partnerships among the participating scholars and institutions.
The 6th Conference of LDRN, hosted by the National Law University, Delhi, is taking place in the context of pull and pressure of globalisation and localisation. While globalisation produces homogenisation and sameness, localisation produces uniqueness and differentiation. The simultaneous but paradoxical processes of globalisation and localisation have created deep ambivalences in the trajectories of law, justice and development in the countries of the Global South. They are often unpredictable, contradictory, plural and heterogeneous. Therefore, the real challenge before the academia and researchers engaged with the various facets of law and development is how to address and achieve justice for the people. Some of these issues will be discussed during the Conference. The Conference will take place in the blended mode to enable broad based participation.
