NLSIU Signs MoU with IGNFA, Dehradun to Offer the Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law (PGDEL)

The National Law School of India University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today with the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India; to impart the University’s Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law (PGDEL) course to Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers, trainees and probationers, as part of their professional training.
The PGDEL, which is offered by the University’s Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) department, will allow early career IFS officers acquire working knowledge in Environmental Law.
The MoU was signed at the Allen and Overy Hall, Training Centre, NLSIU by Dr. Bharat Jyoti IFS, Director, IGNFA, Dehradun and NLSIU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy. Shri C.P. Goyal IFS, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, MoEFCC, Government of India, Shri P. Subramanyam IFS, DDG, IRO Bangalore, NLSIU’s Registrar Dr N S Nigam and NLSIU’s Centre for Environment Law, Education, Research and Advocacy (CEERA) coordinator Prof. Sairam Bhat were also in attendance.
Capacity Building for the Indian Forest Service (IFS)
The MoU is in line with the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi, which focuses on capacity building in India’s Civil Services. The University’s PGDEL will help IFS officers better understand international and local environmental laws, their limitations and applications, as well as current innovations in environmental conservation, renewable energy, and climate change.
This will make available a pool of trained and competent officers in the field of environmental law to the Government of India and the State Governments, in meeting the challenges of the environment and forestry sector, and effectively implementing Central and State legislations on the subject.
The course will be conducted by NLSIU faculty at IGNFA, Dehradun and will be completed within the programme cycle of the officer trainees’ professional course. The MoU will initially be effective for a period of 5 years.
