Prof. Matthias Mahlmann from the University of Zurich Visits NLSIU | April 2024

This April, we are delighted to host Prof. Mathias Mahlmann from the University of Zurich from April 6 – 15, 2024 at the NLS campus. Prof. Mahlmann is University Professor, and Chair of Philosophy and Theory of Law, Legal Sociology and International Public Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Zurich, Switzerland. He will also be a Visiting Professor with the V R Krishna Iyer Chair on Public Law and Policy Choice at NLSIU.
During his time at our campus, he will be giving lectures in ongoing courses and engaging in a number of activities through the week:
Talk at BIC | The Arduous Pursuit of Dignity for All | Preserving Democracy and Human Rights in a World in Crisis

Professor Mahlmann will be delivering a talk on his recent and critically acclaimed book ‘Mind and Rights: The history, law and psychology of Human Rights’ at the Bangalore International Centre. The talk is titled ‘The Arduous Pursuit of Dignity for All – Preserving Democracy and Human Rights in a World in Crisis’. NLSIU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy will be the discussant. The session will be followed by a moderated Q&A session with the audience.

The NLS Public Lecture Series

NLSIU will host a public lecture by Prof. Matthias Mahlmann on the topic ‘Human dignity as a legal concept – vacuous, redundant, and stupid?’. NLS faculty Prof. Arun Thiruvengadam will be the discussant.

Administrative meetings at NLSIU
NLSIU and the University of Zurich have had an Exchange Agreement since 2014 (which was renewed in 2021). During this trip, Professor Mahlmann will be meeting with the Vice Chancellor and the Exchange Programme team to pursue collaborations under the terms of this agreement. These may include students exchanges at the undergraduate and PhD levels, as well as exchange of faculty between the two institutions. It will also pursue research collaborations across both universities.
