Round Table on Creating Innovation – Friendly Data Protection Regulations

NLSIU in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate is organising a round table on Creating Innovation-Friendly Data Protection Regulations at NLSIU.

Many countries are pursuing data protection regulations—including some modelled after the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Yet not all data protection laws encourage innovation. Many laws lock up data that could otherwise be used for research, or create other obstacles to greater data collection and use. How should countries design data protection laws to encourage innovation? This round table aims to deliberate on the above aspects.

One of the main speakers will be Mr. Daniel David Castro, Vice President, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) and the Director of ITIF’s Center for Data Innovation. He is visiting Bengaluru as part of India- US public diplomacy engagement. Mr. Castro writes and speaks on a variety of issues related to information technology and internet policy, including open data, privacy, security, intellectual property, Internet governance, e-government. His current work on open data includes, helping craft the OPEN Government Data Act), assessing open data policies globally, and identifying data blocking challenges in certain sectors. He has also written reports about the problem of data localization, the benefits of cross-border data flows, and opportunities to improve law enforcement access to data across borders. Castro previously worked as an IT analyst at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) where he audited IT security and management controls at various government agencies.

The round table conference will be held on 5th November at Allen and Overy Conference Hall, NLSIU, from 5 pm.
